Another MAPL Sweep for Baseball Team

Mercersburg scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a dramatic 3-2 win over host Pennington (NJ) in game two of a MAPL doubleheader April 13, giving the Storm a sweep of the two games.

Mercersburg trailed 2-1 entering its final at bat in the second game, and things looked bleak after the first two hitters were retired. But Thomas Davenport '24 kept things alive with a two-out walk and Gavin Williams '25 drove him in with a double to tie the score. After two more walks loaded the bases, Augie Bennett '24 singled to center field to bring home Williams for the walk-off game-winner. The hits by Williams and Bennett were half of the Storm's total for the entire game (Bennett had one of the others as well), but Thomas Marchesi '24 and Brodie Collins '24 only allowed Pennington to have four hits as well, keeping the game tight until the big comeback.

In game one, Davenport pitched six strong innings for the win, striking out 10 while yielding just two hits. Williams came on to finish the game in the seventh. The first contest was scoreless through three innings before the Storm scratched out a couple of runs in the fourth. In the fifth, Williams had an RBI double and Bennett an RBI single in what would be a preview of their game two heroics. Hayden Shirk '24 led Mercersburg with two hits and Marchesi and Collins each had a double.

Now 4-5 overall (4-1 in the MAPL), Mercersburg will host St. Maria Goretti (Hagerstown, MD) on Wednesday, April 17 at 4:30 pm.
