Baseball Salvages Split with Hun

A three-run rally in the fourth broke a 5-5 tie and carried the Storm to an 8-5 win over host Hun School (Princeton, NJ) April 27 and a split of their MAPL doubleheader.

Mercersburg dropped a tough 2-1 decision in the opener that spoiled the combined no-hitter thrown by Thomas Davenport '24 and Brodie Collins '24. Hun scratched out two runs in the third inning of game one on a walk and two errors and made those runs hold up.

In game two the lead flipped back and forth five times, but then neither team scored after the Storm took the 8-5 lead in the fourth. The two teams combined for nineteen hits in the second contest after coming up with just four (all from Mercersburg, obviously) in game one. Augie Bennett '24 had three hits in the nightcap (four across the two games) to lead all hitters while Collins and Hayden Shirk '24 each had two RBI. Thomas Marchesi '24 was the starting pitcher and battled hard for four innings while Gavin Williams '24 came on to blank the Raiders over the final three innings.

The split leaves Mercersburg (8-7 overall, 7-2 MAPL) and Hun tied for first place in the MAPL. The Storm has a home doubleheader against Lawrenceville (3-4 MAPL) and then a potential crucial makeup game against Hill. Right now Hill has a 5-2 MAPL record so it is possible that the rainout from earlier in the year might need to be made up to determine the MAPL champion. Hill defeated the Storm in the one game they did manage to play, so the Blues have the tiebreaker at the moment.

Mercersburg has several games between now and the Lawrenceville doubleheader, including a contest at Berkeley Springs (WV) high school on Wednesday, May 1 at 7 pm.
