Field Hockey Falls to Forbes Road in OT

The Blue Storm varsity field hockey squad battled back from a two-goal deficit to take visiting Forbes Road high school (Waterfall, PA) to overtime October 12, but in the end lost by a score of 3-2.

Two weeks ago, Mercersburg travelled to Forbes Road and lost 5-0. In the rematch, despite being down to only one sub due to injuries and illness, the Blue Storm almost pulled out the victory. The Cardinals got on the board first just six minutes into the first quarter, and extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second period. But Cameron Dotson '23 scored on a tremendous shot from a tough angle midway through the second quarter to cut the margin to 2-1 at the half.

Early in the third period, Hailey Chepren '23 tied things up after Zareen Sorho '23 and Dotson did a tremendous job gaining possession on the left wing and sent the ball into the middle. Neither team scored after that, in large part due to the outstanding effort of Catherine Kidd '23 on defense and Zareena Sorho '23 in goal. The two of them turned away multiple Cardinal attacks as the ball was in the Mercersburg zone for the better part of the game. Forbes Road had 17 corner opportunities while the Blue Storm had none.

The overtime was a sudden death affair and the Cardinals scored three minutes in when a shot from the right wing took a funny hop off Zareena Sorho's pads and found its way into the net. It was a tough ending for a Mercersburg team that fought hard the entire afternoon to keep things close.

Next up for the Blue Storm (2-6) is a home match against MAPL foe Blair Academy on Saturday, October 15 at 1 p.m.
