Girls' Varsity Tennis Knocks Off Pennington

The girls' varsity tennis team picked up its first MAPL win of the season by defeating host Pennington (NJ) School 4-3 September 21.

Each team won three singles matches with Mogere Nyakoe '25 (#2) and Cate Dougherty '25 (#3) dominating their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Ava Marathe '26 picked up the third point at #6 by taking a 7-5, 6-1 victory.

The match would be decided by the doubles competition, which saw Mercersburg take two out of the three contests to pick up the crucial fourth point. Dougherty partnered with Maddie Gray '26 for a relatively easy 8-3 win at the #2 slot. There was nothing easy about the match at #1, in which Nyakoe and Hisano Enomoto '25 fell behind 4-1 before rallying to tie it at 7-7 and force a match tiebreaker. The Storm duo won the tiebreaker 10-6 to clinch the overall team victory.

Mercersburg is now 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the MAPL with a home match against Highland School (Warrenton, VA) on Wednesday, September 25 at 4:30 pm.
