Marchesi '24 Walkoff Carries Baseball Team Past Lawrenceville

Thomas Marchesi '24 hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh for a dramatic 6-5 varsity baseball win over visiting Lawrenceville in a crucial MAPL contest May 11. That hit won game one, but game two was suspended due to rain in the bottom of the fifth inning with Lawrenceville on top 10-5. It is unclear at this time if that game will resume from that spot at a later date or if the Big Red will be declared victorious.

What is clear is that Marchesi's walkoff was one of the most clutch moments in this spring season. The Storm took an early lead on a Marchesi sacrifice fly in the second, but Lawrenceville scored four in the fourth to take control. Mercersburg trailed by one after six, but the Big Red threatened to blow it open in the top of the seventh as they loaded the bases with no outs. Sam Menendez '24 then made one of the top defensive plays of the season, diving to snag a line drive and then crawling to the third base bag to double off the runner. A routine grounder ended the inning with the Storm still trailing by just a run, setting the stage for the bottom of the seventh heroics. Brodie Collins '24 started the winning rally with a leadoff walk and after Tyson Brown '26 bunted him over to second Marchesi launched one onto the gymnasium roof in right field to send his teammates and the home crowd into a frenzy.

Collins and Thomas Davenport '24 had two hits each while Marchesi collected three RBI and Augie Bennett '24 drove in two. Davenport and Gavin Williams '25 shared the workload on the mound.

The decision on whether game two will be resumed or declared a Lawrenceville win has huge implications for the MAPL title as the Storm currently sits at 8-2 while Hun is on top with a record of 10-2. If game two is over then Hun has clinched first place, but if the game resumes and Mercersburg can find a way to rally back and win it, then they can tie Hun for top honors with another win against Hill School on Tuesday, May 14.

That game at Hill is next on the docket for the Storm either way, beginning at 4:30 pm.
