Storm Takes Second in Both Girls' and Boys' MAPL Track

Mercersburg hosted the Mid-Atlantic Prep League Championship meet May 10 and finished second in both the boys' and girls' portions of the event.

The boys' meet ended in dramatic fashion as Hill carried a slight lead into the final event (the 4x400M Relay). Mercersburg's team of Gustavo Lisboa Santana '26, Arnav Rao '26, Iman Zhakan '26, and Ryan Du Plessis '25 took care of business, finishing first with a season's best time of 3:25.03, but the Hill school ended up edging out Lawrenceville by  one second for second place in the event and first place in the meet by just two points (145-143). The boys won four other events including Ryan Du Plessis in both the 400M (48.97 seconds) and 800M Runs.  His time of 1:55.24 in the 800 set a new meet record and both his 400 and 800 times are the third fastest ever in school history. Du Plessis was also part of the winning 4x800M Relay along with Zhakan, Thanasi Akaras '27 and Joe Segal '26. Amon Yamamoto '26 took first in the Javelin with a heave of 146' 8".

Lawrenceville came out on top on the girls' side with 182 points to the Storm's 137.5. Mercersburg showed great team depth across the board and took first in both the Pole Vault, with Bella Levina '25 clearing 9' 7", and the 4x800M Relay, with Lily Killinger '26, Teresa Nyarko '28, Maddie Chu '27, and Anne Sehon '25 taking first with a meet record time of 10:11.79.

"What a fantastic day!," said head coach Nikki Walker. "It was full of emotional ups and downs as both teams led in points at some point during the day. With only three events remaining, the boys were still in the lead. This is my 16th year as the head track and field coach, and I have never had two second place finishes at the end of the season! These kids and these teams out performed themselves.  They gave everything to each other and worked as a team, and it showed!"
